Fair trade practice generally requires that suppliers are paid 15%-30% of the final selling price. We go beyond the minimum requirement and proudly buy baskets for 50-70% of the price that we sell for. By avoiding expensive middlemen, we keep our prices affordable for our consumers while returning a higher price to the weavers. This has a tremendous impact on the lives of our weavers so that education, medical and food needs are met.
Moreover, the Fair Trade Federation reports that trade based on respect for workers’ rights and the environment is growing rapidly and can play a big part in reversing the growing inequities and environmental degradation that have accompanied the growth in world trade. Rest assured, any purchase from Salaam Wanita will not support sweatshops.
